Your Honour? Your Worship? Your Highness?

When you enter a court you’re bound to see individuals wearing long black cloaks with sashes. Most individuals presume that all decision-makers in the court of law are to be referred as “your honour”; however, this is not the case. There are levels within the court system and the sashes symbolize these differences.

Green sash = Justice of the Peace. You are to refer to the justice of the peace as “your worship”. You are likely to speak before a justice of the peace in matters pertaining to Highway Traffic Act violations.

Red sash = Judge. You are to refer to the judge as “your honour”. You are likely to have your case heard before a judge in criminal and family matters.

Just to clarify, do not refer to the decision- maker as “your highness”.
